Writing process? I wake up around 3:00 am, when my characters start poking me. They want page time. Greedy buggers. Sometime during the day, I let them have their way, and I'll write a chapter or so.
Currently working on a historical horror novel that split screens between the Spanish Inquisition's practice (ie a lot of witchhunting) in Sardinia in 1583 and a cursed family living in New York City from the late 1980's-2018 or so.
Curious to see how Write or Die develops...may the force be with you all!!
Question about the new format. Are the weekly "workshop" newsletters a thing of the past? The mutli-part ones were great, and that's why I became a paying subscriber. Recently, the format hasn't felt as engaging, and now I don't see them listed in the what to expect section.
I’m Kelly Thompson, a writer and clinical social worker living at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. I’m also a cult survivor, which has something to do with my enduring interest in questioning authority—including my own.
Right now, my writing practice moves between essays for my Substack, There’s Nothing Wrong With You (And There Never Was), and revising my memoir, Losing My Religion: A Memoir of Rupture and Rapture. I also edit The W(hole), where I publish other writers’ personal narratives and pay writers $100 an essay.
My greatest creative goal is to make art from lived experience. To let the stories serve the art. To keep discovering what I haven’t yet seen.
And yes, to finish this memoir. 😉 I write because I have to, but I would love to see it become a book.
I’m Erica, and I’ve always been pulled to the written word. Right now I finally have the bandwidth to think about my own goals again. Basically, I’m a neophyte writer all over again, trying to channel my younger self who wrote copiously, no audience required 😂.
My biggest goal is to get over myself and just start writing! Anything, everything - poetry, creative writing, commentaries on humanities and faith deconstruction, and even just getting my journaling habit back.
ooh, that sounds very familiar. the main thing is that you're back to a place where you can start writing again! i find journaling helps me get back into it, even if i'm feeling rusty after not having written anything for months. hopefully you'll get to stretch & flex your creative muscles soon! we'll be here for you whenever you need us 🖤 x anna
Hello! I’m Kaylyssa, a writer and stay at home mom of 2. My writing practice is waking up before the kids every morning to journal, read poetry, and then work on a story or poem in my notes app. Whenever I get kid-free time I try to revise/submit as much as I can on my laptop. Sitting at a desk uninterrupted is difficult but I am becoming very experienced at working in fragmented bits of time.
My greatest creative goal is to complete and publish a chapbook of poems. I am working on said chapbook now which is about living in Las Vegas trapped in a bad marriage. I’ve also been trying to post some more essay type of stuff here on substack!
hi Kaylyssa 🖤 thank you for sharing, i'm in awe of your passion for & dedication to your craft. that chapbook sounds intriguing too. hope we'll get to hear more about it soon. keep up the good work!
welcome Barb! glad to have you with us. sounds like you have a solid writing practice (admirable! amazing! what's your secret!), and if that's not a huge step toward eventually having your novel out in the world, then i don't know what is. out of curiosity, how much time do you spend writing on your post-lunch breaks?
i’m Amanda — firstly, a poet but in final revision/query stages with my debut novel (feminist dystopian for the curious 👀). i also write a substack centered around storytelling called STORIES NEVER DIE — feminist lens of writing, literacy & anti-book ban advocacy, and more.
current writing practice: trying to get back to daily but the 9-5 can make that difficult sometimes. but my notebook always stays close by!
biggest goal: make a living off of writing but since that is difficult to attain, also just getting my novel trad pubbed with an agent 🫶🏻
appreciate your kindness, Amanda 🖤 and thanks for a detailed breakdown of your process & passions. i hope we get to see your novel in print soon – love me some feminist dystopia. meanwhile, we'll do our best to share helpful resources to get you where you're going faster. cheers!
Hello I’m Emerson and recently I quit my corporate tech job and became a barista so I could have more time and mental space to write (no regrets (yet))! I hope to eventually get a job in some publishing/literary/writing-related field. Currently, I am working on my first novel! I also write short stories and submit them to lit mags on the side. :)
lovely to meet you Emerson! and love your story – been there too. trading corporate grind for coffee grind is just so... satisfying. especially when you're pursuing your creative passions at the same time! no novel for me yet, but here i am, no longer a barista, but a community manager serving writers around the world 🖤 i wish you the comfiest, most furtive headspace and best of luck with your novel! xx anna

Is Write or Die taking the place of Sub Club?
It's taking the place of Forever Workshop
Nope! Sub Club stays as it is 🫶🏽
I'm Barb and I write most days after lunch. My goal is to have my novel traditionally published, and I'm currently writing and revising micro memoirs.
