Welcome Write-or-Die-ers…er…

Okay that sounds weird. Welcome Writers!! Today we’re kicking off our very first official Write or Die Magazine column: The Business of Being a Writer with Jane Friedman!!

With the rise of platforms like Substack and other social spaces for writers, we see a lot of good (and, let’s face it, bad or just plain wrong) advice for writing, publishing, and marketing your writing.

But Jane has been in this space for decades and is a true professional who has helped literally hundreds of thousands of writers from all genres and forms shape their writing careers.

To say we’re thrilled and blessed she’ll be a regular columnist for us is an understatement.

To celebrate the launch of this weekly Thursday column, take 25% off a monthly or annual full subscription to Write or Die Magazine. But hurry → This flash sale ends tonight @ midnight (eastern time).

ooh yeah i want that sweet 25% off

In Jane’s own words, here’s what this column covers:

Business guidance for writers can often fall into one of two traps: generic ‘you can do it’ encouragement or panic-driven reactions to current headlines. This column is neither. It offers instead a clear-eyed look at how writing careers are built, funded, and sustained over many years, no matter how the landscape changes. It doesn’t matter if you write short or long, go traditional or indie, or what genre and category you prefer: learn how to pursue a career that’s true to your own creative goals, without sacrificing your values.
